Achieve the good life
Grace and Obedience - 1 Peter 1:13-16

The tension between law and grace is longstanding. How does obedience relate to conversion? This is a huge question that the church has struggled with for centuries. They have, over the centuries, been various responses to the question: Arminianism, Legalism, Calvinism, etc.

Peter addressed this question in these verses.

Therefore verse 13 begins with this word. Therefore is an important word and always turns our attention backward. Here it is turning our eyes to verses 1-12 which describe God's saving work.

Following the therefore is the command to live a godly life. Living a godly life (obedience) is rooted in God's saving work (grace).

WHAT THEN IS THE RELATIONSHIP OF OBEDIENCE TO GRACE?

Belivers are to obey because:

a. they are God's chosen pilgrims

b. they have been begotten by the father

c. they have an untouchable inheritance

d. of the greatness of their salvation

The indicative (the basic mood of verb) is always the basis of the imperative (the verbal mood of command).

HOPE - in 1 Peter the word hope is virtually equivalent to the way Paul uses faith. Hope is trusting God for the future. Peter calls his readers to set their hope (trust in God for the future) fully on the grace of God. The circumstantial realities are to be ignored and hope is anchored in grace (unmerited favor). It is the proclamation of this grace that they had believed.

WHAT ABOUT PROOF? SAVED AND BEING SAVED

Verse 13 repeats verse 7 and this tells us the saving work is unfinished. There is a grace that will be ours only when Christ is revealed. This grace will finish our sanctification. If I cannot be fully sanctified in this life, and will be fully sanctified when Christ returns, do I really need to strive toward being holy?

Hope that the work of sanctification will be completed in the eschaton motivates us now!

HOW CAN I SET MY HOPE ON GRACE?

a. Prepare your mind for action

b. Be sober

c. Do not conform

THE REASONABLENESS OF HOLINESS

Verse 15 reminds us that God 'called' us. Separation from what is evil is reasonable, beneficial, and essential.

Holiness in all you do! Why do you think holiness is a reasonable response to God's grace and call?

Verse 16 is Peter's scriptural support for his view (Lev. 11:44-45; 19:2; 20:7)

Model your life after God Himself.
